Shake you belly to the beats!
Buikdansen gebeurt tegenwoordig al lang niet meer alleen op traditionele Egyptische, Turkse of Marokkaanse muziek. Steeds vaker worden de eeuwenoude instrumenten uit het Midden Oosten (zoals oud, kanun, zurna en uiteraard de darbuka) gecombineerd met hedendaagse technologie en clubsounds. DJ Safri kan gerust een expert in deze mengvorm genoemd worden; hij draaide het jaren lang op de legendarische Mystic Grooves party's (oa. in Rasa, Melkweg, Lowlands festival e.v.a.) En nog steeds draait hij het regelmatig voor volle dansvloeren. Daarom een mix met recente nummers in dit genre. De artiesten hebben hun roots in oa Egypte, Libanon, Turkije, Tunesië, Algerije, Griekenland, Spanje en de USA.

Sonic Incense: Indian Dubstep Mix

Dubstep is al jaren lang hot in de underground. De (verre) roots van de Jamaicaanse Dub werden in London versneden met genres als Drum&Bass en Garage. Ook steeds meer migranten met Indiase roots zijn zich met het genre bezig gaan houden. Een aantal van hen was daarvoor al jaren actief in de 'Asian Underground' scene. Flarden klassieke Indiase muziek en Bollywood blijken goed te mengen met de diepe duistere bassen van Dubstep!

DJ Safri luistert al jaren naar Dubstep, maar dit is z'n eerste mix in het genre. Waarschuw je buren, zet je stereo op 10, steek wat wierook op en laat je bedwelmen!

WorldGroove Pioneers Mix

Voor zijn 10de mix voor Solta a Franga dook DJ Safri diep in zijn muzikale roots. Als DJ is hij al bijna 25 jaar actief. Sind 2003 richt hij zich voornamelijk op ‘world grooves’. De jaren daarvoor draaide hij vooral disco, house & techno. Maar ook toen was hij al bijzonder geïnteresseerd in meer exotische en vooral ‘oosterse’ geluiden. De mix van deze maand bestaat uit nummers die hem altijd al fascineerden en die hem uiteindelijk deden besluiten zich helemaal op world grooves te focussen.
Hij stelde zichzelf wel een paar regels voor de selectie: hoe ouder hoe beter, maar ten minste 10 jaar oud. Een recentere remix mag wel, maar ook die minimaal 10 jaar oud. Het is uiteraard maar een kleine selectie, maar een aantal van zijn meest invloedrijke nummers zit er wel tussen.

DJ Safri zocht voor zijn Solta a Franga mix van deze maand een aantal van zijn favorieten bij elkaar en mixte ze samen tot één Global HipHop smeltkroes. De achterliggende boodschap is natuurlijk niet altijd te verstaan, maar komt vaak op hetzelfde neer: Peace! Salaam! Shalom! Paz! Mir! Vrede!

GlobalDubMissionMix

Voor deze mix was DJ Safri in heel relaxte bui en zocht z'n favoriete dub tracks bij elkaar. Dub is oorsprongkelijk afkomstig van Jamaica. Reggae artiesten daar maakten vanaf vroeg jaren '70 spannende instrumentale versies van hun nummers voor op de b-kant van hun singles. De lome nummers met diepe baslijnen werden omgebouwd tot hallucinerende trips, door middel van veel speciale studioeffecten zoals galm, delay, flangers en feedback. Intussen is dub een wijdverbreid begrip in muziek geworden en is het al lang niet meer beperkt tot Jamaica. Overal ter wereld gebruiken muzikanten en DJs dub effecten in hun nummers.

In deze mix naast een originele Jamaicaanse dub klassieker (The Congos) dubversies van oa. Balkan-, Klezmer-, Arabische-, Turkse-, Pakistaanse- en (jawel) ook Nederlandse artiesten! DUBWISE!!!

Deze maand liet DJ Safri zich inspireren door de Engels/Indiase film Slumdog Millionaire, die onlangs 8 Oscars in de wacht sleepte, waaronder die voor beste soundtrack en beste song. De muziek werd gemaakt door A.R. Rahman, een van de bekendste Bollywood componisten van dit moment. DJ Safri is al jaren fan van Bollywood films en A.R. Rahman en is blij dat er eindelijk meer erkenning uit het westen komt. In de mix komt een aantal nummers uit de soundtrack van Slumdog Millionare voorbij. Naast andere Bollywood-, Bhangra & Asian Underground tracks.

Een overdonderende mix van Indiase muziek uit de 21ste eeuw.....
